Can companies chill with calling stuff “Important”?

I just got a letter in the mail from my renter’s insurance company that said:

IMPORTANT INSURANCE POLICY INFORMATION:

PLEASE OPEN IMMEDIATELY

Needless to say, the contents of the letter were neither important nor needed to be opened immediately, if at all. (It was essentially an advertisement for taking out another policy.)

I’m getting numb to companies calling something “Important”.

I get so many emails/letters/notifications that make it sound like my attention is needed RIGHT NOW or else VERY BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN.

Sheesh. Can we just chill?

I guess this is the world we live in, where everything and everyone is in an arms race to compete for our attention.

I just wish the people making these decisions about what to label “Important” were more respectful of the time and attention of their fellow humans.
